S1000D Organizational Overview
S1000D was established with the purpose of developing a global military standard for technical documentation similar in philosophy to the civil airline standard ATA100 (Air Transport Association). The majority of S1000D projects were initially aerospace and 100% military however the standard could be adopted by other industries however this has not taken place to date. The main reason for the bias towards aerospace was S1000D was originally developed to support air vehicles and the support equipment. This omission was recently rectified with S1000D now supporting specific land and sea requirements.

Primarily a European standard the initial governance of S1000D was provided by the ASD (The Aerospace and Defence Industries Association of Europe) formally known as AECMA (Association Européenne des Constructeurs de Matériel Aérospatial). The involvement of the USA required additional transatlantic governance provided by the AIA (Aerospace Industries Association). However these organizations do not develop or maintain S1000D. This is in the hands of specific councils and working groups. Please see a graphical representation of the organization below.

S1000D Orgchart

The latest and very significant development is collaboration between representatives of the ATA (Air Transport Association) and the S1000D organizations to determine the feasibility of merging the civil aerospace documentation standard iSpec2200 with S1000D. This is an ironic twist considering one of the prime reasons for developing S1000D was in response to the ATA standard of the time.
