Hotspots are sensitive areas in an illustration, comparable to hyperlinks in a webpage. The term 'hotspot' is used to describe the clickable area on an illustration which usually provides you with a link to navigate the technical publication.

The hotspot can be used in various contexts, providing a link to text in a Data Module, for example a parts list. It could also provide you with a link to text in a separate Data Module, an area of the same illustration or an area another illustration. The actual hotspot region could be the callout number, or include the leader line and the graphic element itself. The benefit to the user is the provision of information in an intuitive environment, enabling the easy identification of parts and assemblies and providing a graphical navigation of the documentation.
The technology that enables this capability is based on CGM (Computer Graphics Metafile), this file format allows you to include graphical meta-data, providing the ability to describe a hotspot 'region' or a target for the link known as a 'viewcontext'. The creation of this information requires you to utilize specialized and sophisticated illustration tools developed specifically for this purpose.
The creation of hotspots and subsequent delivery of the illustration is a key requirement when the intended output is an IETM (Interactive Electronic Technical Manual).
