Illustration Guidelines

The stated purpose of illustrations for use in S1000D is to amplify and clarify text, the objective to reduce the length of explanations describing functions, procedures etc. Guidance is provided for the production of illustrations to be presented on paper and for electronic delivery on screen.

There are specific rules you will be required to follow in the illustration process, below is a summary of some of the recommendations.

  • The illustration must provide maximum information for the end user with particular awareness of the output media.

  • Illustrated parts must be clearly identifiable and annotated appropriately.

  • Location arrows, leader lines, annotations, etc must be clearly shown and free from surrounding detail.

  • The use of 2D and 3D CAD data is discouraged, although in both cases the data will be accurate, it will either not convey the information convincingly or it includes too much detail. A simple technical illustration would easily solve both these issues.

  • The illustration is to be created at a realistic but sensible size, if important sections of the illustration are very small they must be enlarged in a detail drawing to represent the information clearly.

  • Exploded illustrations, where possible must convey to the maintainer the correct disassembly order of the equipment.

  • If several identical parts are present on an illustration only one is required to be shown providing it is clear where the other parts are located and their orientation.

  • Wiring or system diagrams, schematics or other charts where symbols are used can be described as illustrations and therefore are required to follow the same rules of naming and delivery format.

  • Illustrations are to be created and delivered inline with their intended output format. Illustrations destined for print should always be portrait in format however landscape illustrations can be used with the provision of a fold-out page but this must be described in the business rules of a specific project. If the illustrations are intended for electronic delivery via an IETM (Interactive Electronic Technical Manual) then format restrictions do not apply however if the illustration has the ability to be printed then its layout must be considered.

  • The use of color is encouraged where the illustrations are to be delivered electronically and clarification of the information is required. However there is a specific S1000D color palette that should be used to be compliant with the standard.

The example illustration below was created in respect to S1000D guidelines. The detail drawing clearly depicts the location of the assembly on the vehicle.
The display of the ICN Code on the illustration is an option, usually dependant on the project requirements.
