How to create S1000D compliant graphics
The flow chart below provides a Step by Step guide to creating compliant S1000D graphic files.

Step by Step Guide to Creating S1000D Compliant Graphics

Step 1
The source data for the finished technical documentation can be supplied from many systems and in different file formats. It is unlikely that any of these sources will be able to supply compliant S1000D graphics, the only exception being scanned legacy data saved in a TIFF format.

Step 2
ITEDO products provide an effective gateway for the conversion of the source data. The conversion of 3D CAD data is of paramount importance mainly to optimize the file structure and size. If you're using IsoDraw to create illustrations from scratch then no conversion process is required.

Step 3
The successful conversion of data crucially provides a single source archive which can then be repurposed. Converted CAD files could require the addition of missing information such as annotations, leader lines and text. The insertion of meta-data might also be required, hotspots for example if the technical documentation is to be supplied as an electronic manual.

Step 4
When work on the graphic is complete it can then be saved as a S1000D compliant file. ITEDO products enable you to perform all these tasks with no additional effort.

Step 5
Finally the compliant graphic file is inserted into the SGML or XML Data Module or an electronic manual build system. The graphic is stored in the CSDB (Common Source Database) for asset management purposes.

S1000D compliant illustration Illustration Guidelines - The stated purpose of illustrations for use in S1000D is to amplify and clarify text, the objective to reduce the length of explanations describing functions, procedures etc. Guidance is provided for the production of illustrations to be presented on paper and for electronic delivery on screen.

IETM Interactive Graphics - Hotspots are sensitive areas in an illustration, comparable to hyperlinks in a webpage. The term 'hotspot' is used to describe the clickable area on an illustration which usually provides you with a link to navigate the technical publication.
