The ICN (Illustration Control Number)

The naming of an illustration is a very important factor and one you should not under estimate. The illustration along with Data Modules is managed by the CSDB (Common Source Database) however an illustration is not able to contain meta-data unless it is graphical. Therefore the ICN (Illustration Control Number) is used to identify and manage the information.

The ICN is a unique code and can be up to 45 characters in length and contains similar information to the Identification and Status section of a Data Module, for example security classification and issue number, however the ICN captures this information in the file name.

The illustration is referenced information from the Data Module not embedded. Therefore the ICN is crucial when linking the correct illustration to the corresponding SGML or XML tagged elements in the Data Module.
