Illustrations often have to be converted to a format that is suitable for electronic delivery.

If the illustrations are available in a raster format (TIFF, JPEG, GIF, etc.) you must find a passable compromise between file size and display quality.

The use of raster data is mostly limited since it loses quality when displayed in enlarged size (zoom). This disadvantage does not occur with vector graphics.
