CGM Tips

Learn all the tips and tricks from the pro's of CGM. This list contains practical tips that will help you master CGM. The CGM standard is a very complex set of documents. Its purpose is to help a programmer to write software that can handle CGM files in one way or the other. Well, not everybody is a programmer, and sometimes it turns out to be difficult to find the right piece of information in the standard.

The following list contains brief explanations and tips around CGM. This information will help you to better understand the standard, and at the same time improve the quality of your CGM files. The list will be intended to answer the most common questions around CGM.

Checking the fonts used in CGM files - When exchanging files, the use of text in these files is a particularly important aspect. This article shows you the possibilities that exist for working with these texts and fonts.

Converting Adobe Illustrator files to CGM - If your technical illustrations are in Adobe Illustrator format and you wish to convert these to CGM, there are a couple of things you should take into consideration.

CGM and the XML companion file - The CGM community has been discussing the concept of XML companion files for CGM files for a while. Now the first draft of a standardized XML companion file has been prepared within the ATA GREXCHANGE 2.9 profile by the ATA Graphics Working Group.

CGM and Metacheck - there is one and only one program you can rely on when it comes to CGM testing: Metacheck.

Metadata in CGM files - With the increased support for CGM version 4, the number of illustrations stored and distributed in this format has increased rapidly over the past years. The most predominant profiles are WebCGM and the ATA GREXCHANGE profile of the Air Transport Association. The CALS community references both profiles from within their MIL-D-28003B specification.

What is the difference between WebCGM and CGM? - The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C, http://www.w3.org) has released the WebCGM profile, which has been developed in collaboration with CGM Open. A lot of CGM users want to know about the differences between WebCGM and CGM in general, so here is an overview.

How can I migrate to WebCGM? - Good question. Most common graphics applications generate CGM in a pretty unpredictable way. Only applications with sophisticated CGM support will allow the user to specify the profile to be used.

Version 1 or Version 4: The key to CGM quality - Polylines and poor quality is what many users see in CGM files. In most cases the wrong version of CGM has been used.

Which files can I use in WebCGM viewers? - Very often, CGM users try to use generic CGM files in WebCGM viewers without success. Here is an overview what you should watch out for.

WebCGM Fragment - do it the right way - The WebCGM Profile defines a so-called fragment syntax that allows for navigation to or highlighting of a graphical object. Here you can find tools and code that will help you to find your way through the manifold variations of the fragment.
