Accentuation in Technical Illustration

There are various ways to accentuate a specific part in its installation position. However in order to keep the printing cost as low as possible, it is recommended to opt for stylistic devices that are all in black and white.

Time and time again, the part will be represented in a technical illustration along with other elements of the design. Also, its position or assembly position will be emphasized. This could be easily done by applying color, but what if you want to do without color? In such cases, you can work with different line weights (A), outlines (B) or shadowing (C).

By using different line weights, you get various stylistic possibilities. For example, you can set the thick and thin lines of the less important elements to one line weight. Also, you can add extra line weights to the entire illustration and use this for emphasizing specific elements. Additionally, the implementation of grey color for the unimportant elements does set them apart in their visual appearance.

Accentuation

Experiment with these devices and find out which one best support your needs and intentions. Note, however, that the chosen stylistic palette should be applied consistently throughout the whole manual.
