The S1000D Concept
The defining concept of S1000D which separates it from other documentation standards is the Data Module, a chunk of information utilized to support the piece of equipment. A Data Module can contain different information types including descriptive, procedural, fault diagnosis etc. to aid the maintenance of the equipment or even business rules for managing the project. S1000D also defines a CSDB (Common Source Database) for managing the data modules and graphics.

The traditional publications deliverable is usually a single or suite of technical manuals with a linear type structure containing chapters, sections and pages. S1000D has a modular structure, based on Information Sets, a collection of Data Modules, categorized under general headings such as maintenance, operational, illustrated parts information etc. The modular approach provides the opportunity to reuse, manage and deliver information utilizing contemporary methods and tools.

Technical Publications Process Comparison

The DM (Data Module) - The philosophy of S1000D is to base the creation of data on internationally recognized neutral standards. Therefore the production of Data Modules can utilize either SGML (Standard Generalized Mark-up Language) or XML (Extensible Mark-up Language), graphics should use CGM as their compliant format.

The CSDB (Common Source Database) - The CSDB is the repository and management tool for all information objects required to produce the technical publications for a S1000D project. It can also be utilized for media output purposes including paper or electronic delivery.

The ICN (Illustration Control Number) - The naming of an illustration is a very important factor and one you should not under estimate. The illustration along with Data Modules is managed by the CSDB (Common Source Database) however an illustration is not able to contain meta-data unless it is graphical. Therefore the ICN (Illustration Control Number) is used to identify and manage the information.
